Portulacaria pygmaea

Pygmy Porkbush (Portulacaria pygmaea)

Native to the hyper-arid Richtersveld along the border of Namibia and South Africa, Portulacaria pygmaea (formerly Ceraria pygmaea) is a highly coveted dwarf pachycaul succulent. It forms a swollen, fissured, caudiciform-like woody base crowned with clusters of tiny, fleshy, glaucous blue-green leaves adapted for extreme water conservation. Being naturally dioecious and very slow-growing, it develops an authentic, miniature bonsai habit requiring minimal intervention.

📋 Core Botanical Care Parameters

☀️ Light Requirements

Requires full sun to bright, intense indirect light to maintain compact branch structure and silvery leaf coloration. Insufficient light leads to etiolation and leaf drop.

💧 Watering Frequency

Extremely susceptible to root rot; apply a strict 'soak and dry' method, allowing the substrate to dry completely between waterings. Cease or drastically reduce watering during cold winter dormancy.

🏺 Soil Mix

70% Gritty inorganic mineral mix (pumice, volcanic lava grit, zeolite, coarse perlite) + 30% low-organic cactus potting soil.

❄️ Cold Tolerance

2°C (USDA Zone 10b). Strictly frost-tender; must be kept dry if temperatures drop below 10°C and overwintered indoors in temperate climates.

🌱 Propagation Method

Semi-hardwood stem cuttings (slow to root), grafting onto vigorous Portulacaria afra rootstock, and seeds.

🐾 Pet Safety

This plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs and safe for pet-friendly homes.
