String of Pearls (Senecio rowleyanus)
Senecio rowleyanus
Native to southwest Africa, Senecio rowleyanus is an iconic trailing succulent featuring pea-shaped spherical leaves evolved to minimize water loss in arid habitats. Each spherical leaf features a translucent epidermal window that directs sunlight into the leaf interior to fuel photosynthesis. It produces delicate, cinnamon-scented discoid flower heads with protruding purple stamens.
📋 Core Botanical Care Parameters
Bright, indirect light is ideal. Can tolerate a few hours of gentle morning sun, but intense, direct midday light will scorch the spherical leaves.
Follow a strict soak-and-dry protocol. Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry and the epidermal windows puckered slightly; avoid top-watering over the crown to prevent stem rot.
60% pumice, lava rock, and coarse perlite + 40% organic cactus/succulent compost. Shallow pots with ample drainage holes accommodate its shallow root system best.
0°C (USDA Zone 10a)
Stem cuttings. Snip a healthy trailing stem and coil or pin it horizontally onto moist, gritty substrate; roots will emerge rapidly from leaf nodes.
This plant contains toxic sap/compounds. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
