Pencil Cactus / Firesticks (Euphorbia tirucalli)
Euphorbia tirucalli
Native to arid regions of Africa, this succulent shrub or small tree features dense clusters of cylindrical, pencil-thick photosynthetic branches with minute, ephemeral leaves. Cultivars like 'Firesticks' glow in brilliant shades of yellow, orange, and fiery red under full sun and drought stress. When damaged, it exudes a highly caustic and irritating milky white latex sap.
📋 Core Botanical Care Parameters
Full sun to bright indirect light. Requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to maintain its intense fire-like red and orange coloration.
Soak-and-dry protocol. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, reducing frequency dramatically during winter dormancy.
60% Pumice/Lava grit + 40% Quality succulent soil (fast-draining, mineral-dominant mix).
0°C (USDA Zone 10a). Completely intolerant of freezing temperatures.
Stem cuttings. Rinse cut end under cold water to stem latex flow, allow callous formation for 3-5 days, then root in dry gritty substrate (always handle with protective gloves).
This plant contains toxic sap/compounds. Keep out of reach of cats and dogs.
