# Golden Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus grusonii)

> Endemic to central Mexico, Echinocactus grusonii is a monumental globular cactus celebrated for its pronounced ribs clad in vivid golden-yellow spines. As it matures over decades, it gradually takes on an elongated, cylindrical silhouette and produces small, bell-shaped yellow flowers around its crown. ## Light & Sun Exposure

Requires full, direct sunlight for at least 6-8 hours daily; inadequate light causes spine discoloration and unnatural elongation.

## Watering Schedule & Method

Strict soak-and-dry regimen; water thoroughly only when substrate is completely dry during spring and summer, and suspend watering entirely in winter.

## Soil & Gritty Mix Formula

70% inorganic grit (pumice, lava rock, coarse sand) + 30% organic cactus peat mix.

## Cold Tolerance & Overwintering

-5°C (USDA Zone 9a) - Can tolerate brief light frosts only if kept bone-dry.

## Propagation Methods

Primarily grown from seeds; occasionally propagated via basal offsets removed from mature specimens.
