# Black Spined Copiapoa (Copiapoa cinerea)

> Native to the hyper-arid coastal cliffs of Chile's Atacama Desert, Copiapoa cinerea is celebrated for its chalky-white to ash-grey pruinose epidermis contrasted against stark, jet-black spines. In habitat, it survives almost entirely on dense coastal sea fogs (camanchaca), growing at an exceptionally slow pace over decades. Mature specimens develop a dense, woolly apical crown from which subtle yellow, funnel-shaped flowers emerge.

## Light & Sun Exposure

Full sun to maximum bright light. Requires intense ultraviolet exposure and excellent airflow to maintain its signature chalky-white waxy patina and deep black spination.

## Watering Schedule & Method

Extremely sensitive to overwatering; apply a strict soak-and-dry approach only during active spring and autumn cycles. Keep entirely bone dry in winter and during severe summer heat dormancy.

## Soil & Gritty Mix Formula

%85 Gritty mineral substrate (Pumice, volcanic lava, zeolite, decomposed granite) + %15 Low-organic cactus soil.

## Cold Tolerance & Overwintering

0°C (USDA Zone 10a); tolerant of brief dry cold spells, but ideally wintered above 8°C to prevent tissue scarring.

## Propagation Methods

Primarily grown from seeds; occasionally via careful harvesting of basal offsets or apical grafting onto hardy rootstock.
